God wanted to free them from the horrible bondage of Egypt, yet now they are accusing God of hating them. You remember the case of Job, it said in all of these things, that is the loss of his family and his wealth and all, he did not curse God neither did he charge God foolishly. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. Ishmael (in the first century) into thirteen, by the analysis of one of them (the 5th) into six, and the addition of this sound exegetical rule, that where two, Ver. Obedience is the claim. So it was done; but it is added that, when they did depart from Horeb and went through the wilderness, "which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God doth give unto us. So these are the words which Moses spake unto all of Israel on the side of Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea ( Deuteronomy 1:1 ). This indicates that Moses assumed that those who read Deuteronomy would have prior knowledge of his preceding four books. Og the king came out, and as with Heshbon, so with Bashan. Now, there is the coming out of the old life, being delivered from the old life, and this new relationship that we experience with God, learning to walk by faith, as we are setting aside the things of the flesh life and are beginning this new walk in the spirit. 7-9). It was not yet Christ manifested, but man under trial of the law and its ordinances and restraints, dealt with as living in the world, and instructed in view of this present life. It is not the people's consecration to God, but their discipline, the trial of heart, and exercise by the way to which Jehovah subjected the people; and a most instructive section it is in this point of view. 2). The book of Deuteronomy acknowledges this failure, and takes its stand not only on the fact that it was impossible to deny, it but on the duty of confessing it. (6) The Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb. We hear of sin and trespass-offerings, peace and burnt-offerings, meat-offerings and drink-offerings, not to speak of the daily lambs and occasional victims. He sets Himself against the high places; He will not have them. It is founded on the life of Christ in resurrection, when the Holy Ghost brings us into the power of enjoyment. But where is the savage even who does not know the wrongness of stealing? 7. You may not possess all of your possessions and yet, if you spend your life roaming in the wilderness it's not God's will, it's not his desire, but he will be with you there and help you there. Such is the point here in the seventh chapter. 1:6-7. 8-10. 11). 12-18; ^C Luke XIX. (1) Et non sans cause; and not without reason. We have here, I. Thank Him for bringing you through the land of your [proverbial] enemies, for your enemies stood between you and the Promised Landand now you are that much closer to crossing over into the Promised Land. Behold I have set the land before you,Deuteronomy 1:8; Deuteronomy 1:8. The "Lord our God," "Jehovah our Elohim," is the watchword of the whole book. But there is another point peculiar to this book. What God lays on one He does not necessarily enjoin on another. What have I to ask beside? Nothing less. And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone: Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.'' there is formality enough, and without having written forms, the heart may frame forms of its own, as we may have observed, if not known it in our own experience, without finding fault with other people, For notoriously, in a legal state of mind people are apt to get through the acknowledgment of sin in what they know has grieved the Lord; but even then there is a want of bowing to His will. These were solemn words to bring before the minds of Israel just about to enter into the good land. "Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that thou hast gathered in thy corn and thy wine." "Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name." And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them ( Deuteronomy 1:2-3 ); So, there's an eleven-day journey from Horeb to Kadeshbarnea to the beginning of entering into the Promised Land, but they have been journeying for forty years and eleven months on an eleven-day journey. iv. It was not merely a sight of God, but One who deigned to take the liveliest and most intimate interest in His people Israel. "These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which Jehovah God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth." This was their point of imitating God. It is well to remark here that verse 24 is exactly parallel with verse 13; that it is not Moses in verse 13, but Jehovah who commands to "rise up," etc., in both; and that verses 10-12 are a parenthesis of instructive past history for moral profit like verses 20-23. 7). For a Jew no doubt there is the law of Moses. Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount. 2). iv. All this was now closed. *Dr. D. (Introd. Far from being done with, we know from the word of God that He will maintain the sabbatical rest strictly, and enforce it in the days of the kingdom; so that, if a man does not bow to His authority, he will assuredly come under divine judgment: so much does Jehovah make of it in itself, and so much will He make of it for the obedience of others in the day that is coming. It was by this Scripture that the Lord, as we know, repelled the first temptation of the adversary. We are studying Deuteronomy 6:1-9 for Sunday, December 2. But Jesus knew God Himself as Moses never did, and by His use of it put honour on the book that makes plain how in a state of ruin the one saving principle is obedience. There was no doubt whatever that Esau had behaved so ill that the children of Israel were not likely to forget it. Still stubborn and disobedient, the people who would not go into Canaan with God then tried to conquer the country without him. We shall meet with others ere long, we shall come to civil ones, but we are not going beyond the religious charges at present. In comparing the allegorical Canons of Philo with those of Jewish traditionalism, we think first of all of the seven exegetical canons which are ascribed to Hillel. This too explains why the book of Deuteronomy is made use of in the New Testament in so very striking a manner, and in circumstances so eminently critical. But he found that there was another law, a perverse kind of a law, that whenever he would do good, evil was present with him. We have the consecration of the people to God. Deuteronomy 1:1-46 lets us see the end of disobedience; Deuteronomy 2:1-37; Deuteronomy 2:1-37; Deuteronomy 3:1-29 give us to know as clearly the result of obedience. Rebuilding the Temple (Ezra 1:1-6:22) Bible Commentary / Produced by TOW Project The Book of Ezra begins with a decree from King Cyrus of Persia, allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple that had been destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 BC (Ezra 1:2-4). There was a danger that Israel's stay at the mount might last too long. Moses mentions how the saying pleased him: here things are stated exactly as they were. ), "2 Notwithstanding such express declaration, the following diversities occur. I do not envy them the thought that God has not revealed His mind about what is nearest to Himself, and what most of all is bound up with His glory! He gave them this rehearsal and exhortation purely by divine direction; God appointed him to leave this legacy to the church. Both were powerful motives not to dread the Canaanite races, who were destined to extirpation. 6, 7). 16); yet it has pleased his majesty to reveal himself to us in his word, so far as our weak capacity can best conceive him. This was their boast. Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them. "Hear, O Israel." That is, we see in them a number of institutions laid down by Jehovah, the pattern of which was shown in the mount. To what were they always inclined? And so they departed from Horeb. The same Spirit which has the power of miracle is the Spirit of truth and the Holy Spirit. In all the three occasions the Lord Jesus draws His answers from the book of Deuteronomy. And this characterizes the book of Deuteronomy. II. Thus: God is that one spiritual and infinitely perfect essence, whose being is of himself eternally (Deut. *. perhaps the more appropriate translation is the one that points to the exclusive demand of this God to be the only God Israel acknowledges and worships (5:6 See also Exodus 20:2). i. He was a descendant of Aaron, and belonged to one of the wealthiest and most influential families among the Jewish merchant-princes of Egypt. None ever honoured God's word as Christ did. And so often the good that he wanted to do, he couldn't do and the evil he didn't want to do was the thing that he was doing until he found himself in just a miserable, wretched state. God appointed judges (Deuteronomy 1:16) to help Moses carry the burden of legal decisions that resulted from the giving of the Law. 16); yet it has pleased his majesty to reveal himself to us in his word, so far as our weak capacity can best conceive him. Our mind will be upon the fleshly things continually; What shall we eat? - 1 Timothy 2:3-5. They are no longer to go up and take possession of the land, but to turn back and take their journey into the wilderness. Ah! Deuteronomy 31:1 "And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel." "Moses went and spake": Though some interpreters view this verse as the conclusion to the foregoing address in (chapters 29-30), it is better to see these words as an introduction to the words of Moses which follow, based upon the general pattern of Deuteronomy. The book of Deuteronomy discloses it. Thus: God is that one spiritual and infinitely perfect essence, whose being is of himself eternally (Deut. * It is a familiar point to many, but may claim a brief notice here, especially as all do not see its bearing in by no means the least striking of the ten words; I speak of the law of the sabbath. And you know God told me to go here and it was just really horrible and all," and all this stuff. The sermon that appears in The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, vol. Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. The place were they were now encamped was in the plain, in the land of Moab (Deuteronomy 1:1; Deuteronomy 1:5), where they were just ready to enter Canaan, and engage in a war with the Canaanites. For what are we here but to please God? "The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there. If we have seen the object of all this part of Deuteronomy to be the enforcement of obedience, there is nothing which maintains obedience so much as redemption; and if that were the case when it was only an outward deliverance, how much more when it is eternal? But then as he moves into the eighth chapter of Romans, he found the answer to his cry. How many one has known who would have liked much to be martyrs! So long God had borne their manners, and they had borne their own iniquity (Numbers 14:34), and now that a new and more pleasant scene was to be introduced, as a token for good, Moses repeats the law to them. They knew it was not God's will that forty years of wilderness wanderings should lie between Egypt and the Promised Land (Deut. Not surprisingly, they were defeated and driven back into the wilderness (41-46). And when they had situations that were too difficult for them to handle, that Moses would handle those cases. For Jehovah thy God blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing." There was incomparably greater strictness of judgment with the children of Israel than with all their enemies put together. But the motive here is not because God rested upon that day, but because they were to remember that they were servants in the land of Egypt, and that Jehovah had brought them out through a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm: "Therefore Jehovah thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath-day." God wants to bring you on into the walk of the spirit and the life of the spirit and a life that is dominated by the spirit. May I learn the lessons You desire to teach me so that I may mature in the faith by trusting Your Word and obeying Your commands. "The saying pleased me well, and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe: and they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eschol, and searched it out. It might belong to the true God; but "Thou shalt not hearken" if there was the smallest risk of going after other gods. [It was now eighteen months since Jesus had visited Jerusalem, at which time he had healed the impotent man at Bethesda. Let me just refer to this for a moment longer, lest there should be any mistake about what appears to me to be the truth about it. However Judea, here and there, doth swell out much with mountains, yet its chief swelling appears in that broad back of mountains, that runs from the utmost southern cost as far as Hebron, and almost as Jerusalem itself. Not that this made the smallest cloud between Master and servant. He wanted to leave them his blessing nay, he wanted them to have the best blessing that God could give them. A people holy to Jehovah must not eat anything that dies of itself, nor accustom itself to an uncomely act, were it with a dumb and dead kid and the milk of its dam. And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace." Thus when the story of their rebellion is mentioned, it leads Moses to go back and to trace how this spirit betrayed itself even so early as at Horeb; for when it is a question of rebellion, we must go to the root of it. There are two places noted by the name Rekam in the very bounds of the land,--to wit, the southern and eastern: that is, a double Kadesh. We may rejoice in the God that has so dealt with us, but is it becoming that Christ's death should be a call to transports? 5; John iv. This is precisely what does put man to the proof morally. "And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep and do them." That borders on blasphemy. Edomites or Moabites or Ammonites, unfeeling and disposed to injure Israel, still God would educate His people in remembering whatever bond of nature there was: if blows came, God would not forget the delinquent. In Deuteronomy 5:14 is the addition, 'thine ox nor thine ass,' as well as the clause, 'that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou.' The spring of obedience was wanting. 24; 2 Cor. It was no longer "How shall I free myself?" But you are the one that puts the limitations on what God wants to do. Conceive the state of mind which could say that "in Deuteronomy Moses repeatedly lays the blame of his expulsion on the people (Deuteronomy 1:37; Deuteronomy 3:26; Deuteronomy 4:21); but according toNumbers 20:12; Numbers 20:12 God punished him thus for not believing Him, while inNumbers 27:14; Numbers 27:14 his punishment was occasioned by the legislator's own disobedience"! Such was the uniform walk of Jesus. Such was the genuine result of sending the spies. The word Deuteronomy means the second law. Meanwhile they were not to meddle with their kindred, even though jealous and unkind. When things aren't going right, I hear people sometimes make very foolish charges against God. (Exodus 20:1; Deuteronomy 5:22. A few, however, think that the record in Deuteronomy is the more exact, because when Moses recorded the words in Exodus he had heard the decalogue pronounced; whereas, when he repeated it in Deuteronomy, it was in his hands, inscribed in permanent letters. What did not so much manifest obedience is left out, though it might have an important spiritual meaning in its place; for certainly other feasts (as the feast of atonement, for instance) had. His fame and prolonged obscurity made his enemies anxious for him to again expose himself in their midst. Moses began his recital of Israels history at Horeb (Sinai) because this is where Yahweh adopted the nation by making the Mosaic Covenant with her. And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone." I dare say we have almost all done so, without referring to any particular mode; for alas! and we have seen the sons of the Anakims there ( Deuteronomy 1:28 ). "So it came to pass when all the men of war were consumed from among the people, that Jehovah spake unto me, saying, Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day: and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them." His death to the law is not therefore to weaken the authority of the law, but because of the principles of divine grace which are now brought out in Christ risen from the dead, founded on His death, manifested in His resurrection, and maintained by the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. We have to remember that we get and learn only that we may apply and act. And the beautiful thing is that God is with you, even in the wilderness experiences. "4. And Moses said, "No, don't. This is a universal and abiding principle. There is then (verses 12-18) pointed out the way to deal with a city guilty of idolatry. At all events, whatever may be His grace, whatever His ways with His people, obedience is that with which He cannot dispense. And so they chose one from each tribe to go in and to spy out the land. If you suspect a rogue is in your employment, you may test him by marking a piece of money to see whether he steals or not: am I then going to mark something for God to see whether He will keep His word or not? 4. It is evident that they are somehow or another connected with God, and touch matters of religion, as men would say. We luxuriate in retired communion, in restful fellowship with God, in converse with fellow-believers, in Church ordinances; and we think how sweet it would be if this could always last. This he tried to conceal from One, all whose ways were obedience, venturing to insinuate what a noble demonstration of His Messiahship it would be. For a reason given already. He's looking now outside of himself for the help. For the LORD your God which goes before you, shall fight for you, according to all that he did in Egypt before your eyes; And yet you went in this thing you did not believe the LORD your God ( Deuteronomy 1:29-32 ). Commonly indeed we see that Christians understand a great deal better what the Jews ought to have done, than what they themselves ought to be doing. The copulative conjunction is prefixed to the last four commandments in Deuteronomy. The other had its place when God was giving the book of Leviticus. Above all the prime object is to press obedience on the people of God, but the obedience of a people who had already found what it was to have utterly broken down on their own assumed responsibility. Therefore it was that, when God told them to go up, they refused and suffered the consequence of their disobedience. He may not at all have understood at the moment what was working in the people; but all is told out. (Gen. Xlix. "Is He then indeed your Father?" To apply what now occupies us here, give me the chief, fundamental, and most salient points of Christianity, and I will show you that these are the very truths that Christians are most in danger of forgetting. (October, a.d. i. But God is very careful, in the face of the passover, that there should not be a forgetfulness of that escape which brought them out together then. deserved. * This it is well to note, as we should not have discovered it from the Book of Numbers. The heart may be made up to follow the Lord, but the difficulties are still felt keenly; whereas the man who only theorises is ready in his own conceit, in word at least, to do anything; but there is no seriousness of spirit: he does not know himself yet. So the commandment of God; "you've been here long enough, you've circled this mountain long enough". They did not have a personal memory of the horrible bondage in Egypt. John here used the word "Jews" as a designation for the Jerusalemites, who, as enemies of Christ, were to be distinguished from the multitudes who were in doubt J. Thus then the circumstances of Moses, as well as of the people, were precisely those suited to impress the lesson of obedience. "Virtually all of Palestine and Syria are included in these terms [in Deuteronomy 1:7], an area larger than Israel ever possessed in fact, even during the reigns of David and Solomon." This therefore gives its tone to the book.
